Jodie Markell’s “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamon” has been released on R1 DVD and Blu-ray by Screen Media on September 07, 2010, it can be ordered on Amazon, alongside all known DVD retailers.

Here’s a film that’s actually more interesting for its origins than what wound up on the screen. It’s based on a recently rediscovered play by Tennessee Williams. That it was never performed on stage may be a clue to its weaknesses in the pantheon of overbaked southern soap operas. Bryce Dallas Howard is a 1920s socialite in love with a boy (Chris Evans) from the wrong side of the tracks. The game cast includes Ann-Margret, Ellen Burstyn, Will Patton and Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep’s daughter), but to little avail. Extras: widescreen, deleted scenes, featurettes

A slacker trust-fund type finds the motivation to become a coach of a middle school soccer team. Through an unlikely friendship with the team’s thirteen-year-old star player, and a budding relationship with Gabrielle who questions his party-boy lifestyle, Nick begins to understand that growing up is more complicated than he ever could have imagined – whether it be at thirteen, or at twenty-eight. Nick embraces his new challenge, his new girlfriend, and his soccer team of misfits, and with a few missteps along the way, ends up finding himself in a place he never thought possible.

When I first saw her I did not know that she was Meryl Streep’s daughter and I kept saying this is such a great young actress and she’s got so much personality on stage. She was in a play that was directed by my friend, Michael Greif, and I was like, ‘God. Where did Michael find this girl?’ And then halfway through I was like ‘She kind of reminds me of, oddly enough, Meryl Streep.’ And then I found out she was Meryl Streep’s daughter. I really did not come to her because she was Meryl Streep’s daughter, I actually was taken by her talent. And she’s just so perfect Julie, who’s the girl next door but she’s got a wild streak underneath and a great sense of humor.

Mamie will be starring opposite Ellen Burstyn, David Strathairn, Chris Evans and Ann Margret in “Loss of a Teardrop Diamond”. The film is based on Tennessee Williams play of the same name and stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Fisher Willow, the disliked 1920s Memphis debutante daughter of a plantation owner with a distaste for narrow-minded people and a penchant for shocking and insulting those around her. After returning from studies overseas, Fisher falls in love with Jimmy (Chris Evans), the down-and-out son of an alcoholic father and an insane mother. She tries to pass him off as an upper-class suitor to appease the spinster aunt who controls her familys fortune. But when Fisher loses a diamond, it places her relationship with Jimmy in further jeopardy. No word yet on what part Mamie will be playing. Many thanks to Caladonia for the news.
