Mamie Gummer named Women’s Refugee Commission Ambassador

Posted May 25, 2010 by Frederik

Many thanks to Elizabeth for the following press release: New York City, May 25, 2010 – Executive director Carolyn Makinson announced today that award-winning actress Mamie Gummer has agreed to serve as Ambassador for the Women’s Refugee Commission, an organization that works to improve the lives of women, children and adolescent refugees and asylum-seekers. “Mamie has such grace and a real passion for our issues,” said Makinson. “That’s exactly what we are looking for in an ambassador, and we’re thrilled to have her on board.”

Gummer is no stranger to the Women’s Refugee Commission. Some 10 years ago she interned in the organization’s communications department when she was a high school student. But Gummer’s first official role as Ambassador was May 6 when she presented a 2010 Voices of Courage award to Amalia Guzmán Molina, who fled from El Salvador and spent 16 months in detention in the U.S., then founded Families of the Incarcerated. “I can’t wait to go on an overseas delegation,” said Gummer. “Four out of five of the world’s 40-plus million displaced people are women, children and young people and I want to see first-hand what the gaps in service are and what we can do about it.” Read more

“Off the Map” trailer and clips

Posted May 21, 2010 by Frederik

ABC has launched a television trailer for “Off the Map”, as well as four clips from its pilot. The medical drama will premiere during ABC’s fall season. All clips can be streamed in the video archive (be aware that the first excerpt is a bit graphic ;-) )

Captures from the trailer, as well as the show’s first promotional picture, have been uploaded to the Image Library as well. Previews can be found below ABC’s official synopsis for “Off the Map”.

Welcome to “la ciudad de las estrellas” (the city of stars), a tiny town in the South American jungle which has one understaffed, under-stocked medical clinic. That’s where idealistic young Dr. Lily Brenner just landed, along with fellow doctors Mina Minard and Manny Diaz. All of these young doctors are running away from personal demons, but they aren’t the only ones with emotional baggage. Take the legendary and enigmatic Ben Keeton, who was the youngest Chief of Surgery at UCLA. He walked away from it all to found the clinic. Together with his right-hand doctor, Otis Cole, he’ll teach these newcomers how to save lives in the most challenging environment they’ve ever worked in. In this ensemble drama, five doctors who have lost their way will go to the ends of the earth to try to remember the reasons why they wanted to become doctors in the first place.
